Icthus Symbol

Icthus is the Greek word for fish. The fish symbol was adopted by early Christians as a secret sign. The fish symbol was chosen because the letters are an acrostic for the words "Jesus Christ, Son of God and Savior." An acrostic is a 'word' made from the first or last letters of other words.  These letters can then be put together to form a word or message.  In this case the acrostic is made up of the first letters of the Greek words:

I = Iesous - Jesus

C = Christos - Christ

TH = THeou - God

U = Uiou - the son of

S = Soter - the Savior.

  Together, the acrostic means, in English, "Jesus Christ, the Son of God, the Savior".

In the early days of Christianity believers were often persecuted.  Many were imprisoned for their faith.  Cautious about speaking out loud to another person who was imprisoned with them a Christian would initiate contact by drawing a half circle on the ground with the toe of their foot.  If the other person was also a Christian they would complete the symbol of the Icthus by drawing a corresponding inverted circle on the ground, starting at the head of the 'fish' and ending by crossing the line to form the tail of the 'fish',  with their toe.   If the other person followed through they both knew they were with a brother or sister in Christ.

Icthus Symbol

If the other person was not a believer the half circle in the the ground was nothing more than a meaningless doodling.  Believers often used the 'sign of the fish' on or near the door to their home to let other Christians know there was a safe haven inside.

We, here at YeeHawww, are Christians and we are not ashamed of sharing our faith.  We don't use our website to propagate our faith but we do use the Icthus Symbol, the 'sign of the fish' to let you know that we are Christians and that we are because we have personally invited Jesus Christ, who is the Son of God, to become our Savior.

While we will not bombard nor corner you with our faith we do invite you to inquire about Jesus Christ and what He means to us.  You may do so by sending us an email using the link below:
